Phobjikha & Gangtey

A glacial bowl where the cranes come home.

Overview

Phobjikha is a wide, bowl-shaped glacial valley at around 3,000 metres on the western edge of the Black Mountains, its floor a marsh of dwarf bamboo and its sides dark with hemlock and fir. Each winter several hundred black-necked cranes arrive from the Tibetan plateau, circling Gangtey Goemba three times, the villagers say, before they land.

The valley is one of the most important conservation areas in Bhutan, and electricity cables were buried here to protect the birds. Farmers grow potatoes on the slopes, and the Gangtey Goemba, a great Nyingma monastery, looks down from its ridge over everything.

It is a place to walk slowly: the Gangtey Nature Trail through the bamboo and across the marsh, the ridge paths among the farms, and the hide where the cranes feed at dawn. On 11 November the whole valley gathers at the monastery for the Black-Necked Crane Festival.

Best time to visit

Four seasons, two of them famous.

Spring and autumn are peak. Monsoon is green and quiet. Winter is cold, clear and empty.

Spring

March to May

The last cranes leave in early March and rhododendrons take over the forest edges. Cool, bright and quiet, with the Gangtey trail at its best.

Monsoon

June to August

Cold rain and cloud rolling over the bowl, wildflowers in the marsh. Atmospheric rather than easy, with muddy trails.

Autumn

September to November

Potato harvest, clear cold mornings and the first cranes from late October. The Crane Festival on 11 November is a highlight of the year.

Winter

December to February

The crane season. Frozen marsh at dawn, cranes calling across the valley, wood smoke from the farmhouses. Dress warmly and bring your binoculars.

Festivals here: Black-Necked Crane Festival (November). Dates follow the lunar calendar; verify yearly.

Highlights

What Phobjikha & Gangtey does better than anywhere.

Morning mist lifting over the Phobjikha bowl

Cranes at dawn

From the crane observation centre or the edge of the marsh, watch the birds leave their roost in the morning mist. The valley belongs to them from November to February.

Soft light through the pines of the Gangtey Nature Trail

The Gangtey Nature Trail

An easy two-hour walk from the monastery down through pine forest and across the marsh on boardwalks to the village of Khewa. The classic Phobjikha afternoon.

A farmhouse room lit by lamplight in Phobjikha

An evening in a farmhouse

Potato and chilli stew, buckwheat noodles and the hot stone bath afterwards. Phobjikha's farmhouses are among the warmest welcomes in Bhutan.

Dzongs & temples

Whitewashed walls, red roofs, and the people still inside them.

Gangtey Goemba on its ridge above the valley

Gangtey Goemba

Founded in 1613 by Gyalse Pema Thinley, grandson of the treasure-finder Pema Lingpa, and the largest Nyingma monastery in western Bhutan. Its great courtyard hosts the Crane Festival, and the monks' debates carry across the valley in the afternoon.

Khewang Lhakhang

A fifteenth-century village temple on the valley floor at the end of the Nature Trail, with three large Buddha statues inside. A quiet, local place that few visitors stop at.

Winter nights fall well below freezing and even summer evenings are cool. Lodges heat rooms with wood stoves and we pack hot water bottles. Bring a warm layer whatever the season.

Two. One is enough to see the valley; two lets you walk the trail, watch the cranes at dawn and sit by the stove with nowhere to be.
